Reporting Short-Term Gains From Mutual Funds
You must report short-term gains from mutual funds on your income tax return. If your mutual fund makes a distribution, you must consult your paperwork in order to decree what part of the distribution accounted for long-term gains, short-term gains, or dividends. If you sold shares of a mutual fund, you must decree if you achieved a short-term or long-term gain from the sale. This divergence is important, because these gains are all taxed differently.
Reporting Short-Term Gains From Mutual Funds
Long-term capital gains will appear in box 2a of your Irs Form 1099-Div. Short-term capital gains will appear as lowly dividends in box 1a of the same form. Short-term capital gains are taxed in the same manner as lowly dividends. This is why they appear as dividends in box 1a. You should report your short-term gains distributions from form 1099-Div on line 9a of your 1040 form.
If you sold mutual funds one year or less after you bought them, you have short-term capital gains from the sale, unless you sold them at a loss. This amount will not appear on your 1099-Div. You must suspect this gain from the instructions on program D. You will be taking the proceeds from your sale as they appear on form 1099-B and subtracting them from the amount they cost you, agreeing to the program D instructions. The resulting gain, or loss, is reported on form 1040, line 13.
Always double-check your inventory statements to be inescapable they match your 1099s. If there are any discrepancies, you should be able to have the financial custom issue a corrected 1099 prior to filing your income tax return. All the time avoid filing your income taxes with numbers that differ from your 1099s, as this is likely to trigger an Irs Audit.
